The Black Friday crackdown by US prosecutors against the founders of three major online poker rooms has scared the online gambling community, but as we explain below players are being told they can still extract their funds from their accounts.
PokerStars, Full Tilt Back Online

PokerStars, the world's largest online poker company, said on Wednesday that it has started the process of repaying millions of dollars in funds deposited by American players, after it and Full Tilt struck an agreement with the US Department of Justice to return their dot-com domains.

A similar announcement is also expected from Full Tilt, which has been sending out messages to affiliates to remind them that while it is still being stopped from facilitating real money play, deposits or withdrawals from US-based players, it can promise that all player accounts remain safe and secure, and that its technical and legal teams "are working diligently to resolve any outstanding bottlenecks."

It is still unknown if a third site indicted by federal prosecutors, Canadian-based Absolute Poker, has managed to come to a similar agreement with the DoJ.
US Prosecutors "Misleading" Public

Despite the reassurances from the online poker companies, we feel it is worth mentioning that there has been some criticism over "misleading" statement by Preet Bharara, the US Attorney who seized the domain names and said that poker companies have been free at times to reimburse deposit funds.

Professor I. Nelson Rose, a leading expert in gambling law, wrote that not only was it unclear how players were supposed to get their money back, but that even the DoJ - which has entered a gray area - "has not worked out all the details on what it will allow."

To make sure that the poker community does not become complacent, the PPA has just sent out another E-Mail urging their members to keep fighting for online poker in the United States.

IRON DUKE HEART ATTACK PROMOTION

With Valentines Day approaching fast, We have put together a special heart attack promotion!
The second February Promotion will be named Iron Duke Heart Attack.
There will be a daily freeroll tournament. Entry is gained through daily comp points earnings. Every qualifying player then receives a coupon entry to the daily Heart Breaker Tournament. The prize pool will be $500 per weekday and $1000 (per tournament) on Saturday and Sunday. On Valentines day we will make the prize pool $5,000. Players must achieve at least 4,000 comp points to gain eligibility for this tournament.

During the promotion the prize pool will be split down the middle. 50% of the pool will be paid according to the set up of a normal tournament structure. I have had a back problem for many years now. At first it wasnt too bad. Just every now and then. When I went to the doctors, after 3 months, he said its due to having children,[ it all started after my second], and would most likely sort it self out. So I carried on but 3 months later it was not any better. So another trip to the doctors. He said if its still painful after 3 months come back. So another 3 months later, yes back to the docs. The doctor I usually see was not there, I saw a locum. He was a bit more helpful, and put me on some mild painkillers.

This went on for another 2 years. Going back and forth to doctors, it was getting so frequent the staff answering the phones know my voice. Final a new doctor started and I was luckly to see him. He was amazed that the problem wasnt investigated. Thats when the really fun started.
First blood tests then x-rays then more blood tests and even more x-rays.

Then after 7 years of tests and seeing several different specialist, it turned out to be Rheumtism. It has now got to the stage where the pain is constant and I am no longer able to work.

So if anyone suffering with a bad back, keep on to your doctor. Dont let them fob you of with pills after pills. Find out what is causing the pain. The other thing I found out was that I have one leg longer then the other. Normally this is not unusually but [of course] this as meant that my pelvis is at a angle and has made things a lot worse.

Slow playing your cards

I expect you have heard lots of reasons about why to avoid slow playing: It's not advisable, because when you slow play, your opponent has a chance to make a bigger hand without too much expense. There's another reason to play your big hands quickly. Slow play can give your opposition a chance to fold a hand more easily than they would have if you would have bet big from the beginning. Lets say your in a late position and you were dealt10h 10d in a nlhe ring game.
A player raises in early position. The flop is Kh 10c 8h . You've hit your set and, with the king on the board, chances are your opponent has something good could be A-K, maybe pocket Kings or jacks.So he bets the flop and you start rubbing your hands together
Most players will just call,but a raise is usually the best option. If you just call, you risk seeing a heart on the turn. I don't think you need to be worried about the flush beating your set. Your set could easily be beaten even if you raise,but you do need to think about what a 3rd heart will have on your opposition. He/she might think that you could be on a flush draw and be willing to commit a lot of money to the pot, even if he/she has aces or kings.
If, any King, Jack, 10, 9 or a card that pairs the board your opposition will more than likely hesitate. If he/she bets on the turn and you raise, you're making a statement that the turn has helped you.You're announcing that you can beat one pair. If he/she bets the flop of and you raise, he's likely to think that you're bluffing or raising on a flush draw. At that point he/she might feel an all in is the right thing to do,then you can take down a monster pot.
There are some times when slow playing is the best OPTION. I mean if you were to hit a boat or quads on the flop then you will want to give your opposition a chance to bet otherwise you might scare them off and make nothing from your monster hand.

The combined force was conducting a reconnaissance patrol on Wednesday near the NahrSurkh district of Helmand province when a significant number of insurgents engaged with machine guns, rocket propelled grenades and small-armsfire, the statement said

The combined force immediately engaged the Taliban militants with small-arms fire and close air support, killing many of the insurgents before they fled the area, it said.

"The Taliban is desperate for a success, but at every turn ANSF and the Coalition forces have successfully stopped them," said Army Maj. Chris Belcher, a coalition spokesman.

Militancy and conflicts have claimed more than 5,600 people's lives, mostly insurgents, so far this year in Afghanistan.

As reported on Tuesday, the Federal Reserve and the Department of the Treasury released on Monday the suggested rules and regulations to be enforced by the UIGEA.

A 90-day period is now in effect, during which all interested parties are able to submit their comments and concerns on this legislation. After the 90 days expires, the government says it will take those comments into consideration when putting forth the final rules for the Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act of 2006 (UIGEA).

The Poker Players Alliance (PPA), a nonprofit organization "comprised of poker players and enthusiasts from around the United States who have joined together to speak with one voice to promote the game" of poker," is urging poker players, and anyone who is "concerned by this government overreach into our personal decisions" (PPA Website) to make their voices heard.

"Poker players, the American banking community, and anyone who values Internet and personal freedoms should be troubled by this intrusive rule. Deputizing private U.S. financial institutions to determine what are lawful and unlawful transactions will lead to the monitoring and blocking of the personal and lawful financial transactions of many of their customers who wish to play games of skill, like poker, on the internet. This seems more like the actions of Iran than the USA. We are hopeful that sensibility will prevail before these rules are finalized," said PPA Chairman, former U.S. Senator Alfonse D'Amato.

"Congress should act immediately to pass legislation which will effectively regulate Internet poker and provide the proper safeguards to prevent minors from participating in Internet gaming, preserve states' rights and ensure privacy and security of online transactions," D'Amato added.

Monday Night Football Poker League

Nearly 16 hours later, after a dominating final table performance that saw him bust all but one of his final table opponents, Jerry Yang from Temecula, CA beat Tuan Lam from Canada to capture the 2007 World Series of Poker Main Event Championship. Yang, who qualified for the Main Event in a live $225 satellite at the Pechanga casino, picked up the bracelet, a Corum watch, and $8.25 million in prize money. Yang promised to donate 10% of his winnings to the Make a Wish Foundation, Feed the Children, and the Ronald McDonald House, joining a long list of poker players who use their winnings to improve their world.

Day 1c of the 2007 World Series of Poker Main Event was the biggest yet, with 1,743 players entered for what was originally scheduled to be the final Day One of the event. With three days' attendance in the books, the total field is now likely to be close to the 6,000-player mark. It will almost certainly eclipse the size of the field in from 2005, while still lagging well behind the record 8,773 players from last year's Main Event.

Among the notable players to start the field on Day 1C were Phil Ivey, Vanessa Rousso, Kenna James, T.J. Cloutier and Andy Bloch. None of these made it past Day One, as more than half the field went to the rail before play ended at almost 3:30am.

As always the Main Event attracted non-poker celebrities. Light Heavyweight World Champion Antonio Tarver told players this would be their only chance to knock him out, while Jose Canseco took a chance at hitting one last long shot out of the park. Neither the baseball legend nor the boxing superstar made a new career at the poker table, as both were eliminated before the dinner break. Canseco was eliminated when he called Amir Vahedi's all-in on a flop of . Canseco tabled A-J for the flopped Broadway straight, but Vahedi held and filled his nut flush on the river to eliminate the former slugger.

Actor/poker players Jennifer Tilly and Shannon Elizabeth have spent the past several years proving themselves more than a novelty act at the poker table, particularly 2005 Women's WSOP Champion Tilly. They joined actor Jason Alexander in giving the field a little Hollywood sparkle to go with the Vegas neon glow, but only Alexander survived to see Day 2b. It didn't take long for the action to get too "hot in herre" for Nelly, as the four-time Grammy winner was eliminated in his quest for his first WSOP bling.

It wasn't all athletes and actors on Day 1C; there were five former World Champions in the field as well. Robert Varkonyi, Brad Daugherty, Chris Moneymaker, Greg Raymer and Chris 'Jesus' Ferguson all started on Day 1c. Raymer was eliminated early in the day when his open-ended straight draw didn't catch up to his opponent's flopped bottom set. All four other Main Event winners made it through to Day 2b.

The addition of a fourth Day 1 created a second Day 2, which caused some confusion for players on Day 1C. Originally, there were three Day 1s, which all converged on a single Day 2. With four Day 1s, a second Day 2 was added, and players who made it through Day 1c and 1d will compete on Day 2b.

Other notable survivors of Day 1c included Todd Brunson, Chad Brown, Allen Cunningham and Bernard Lee. Day 1c was good for the internet pros as well, with internet poker gurus Darrell 'Gigabet' Dicken, Matt 'SamENole' Smith and Taylor 'Green Plastic' Caby surviving the day.

Ferrari seem to have made significant progress on their cars to put the pressure back on mclaren.Although Lewis Hamilton took pole position Ferrari had the race pace to overcome mclaren and take their second successive victory.
I think Lewis Hamilton was a little disappointed not to have one and blames his 3rd place on the balance of his car but nevertheless his 9Th podium finish in 9 starts is excellent and keeps him 12 points ahead in the drivers championship.Overall a good performance for mclaren and hopefully the new parts in testing this week will pull them back up to Ferrari.
Fillipe massa drove an outstanding race after starting from the pit lane after stalling at the start to finish in 5Th position.

Erik Seidel grabbed his last opportunity for WSOP gold before the Main Event, outlasting a field of 78 top pros in the No Limit 2-7 Single Draw Lowball World Championship. There weren't many tougher fields in the entire series, with Todd Brunson, Barry Greenstein, Allen Cunningham, Freddy Deeb and Chip Reese among those returning for Day Two of the event.

In an interesting side story, the top two contenders for the 2007 WSOP Player of the Year title also returned for the second day of play. Jeffrey Lisandro only trailed Tom Schneider by 30 points to begin this event, and if Lisandro cashed and Schneider missed the money, the title was Lisandro's. Were Schneider to cash and Lisandro not, Schneider

Lewis Hamilton says that Ferrari was not as superior in the French Grand Prix as its 30s winning margin over the McLaren suggested.

The British rookie ran close behind Kimi Raikkonen in the opening stages, but his three stop strategy meant he visited the pits one more time than the Ferraris, and ultimately finished 32s adrift.

But after the race Hamilton insisted that his strategy had made Ferrari appear more dominant than it really was.

“I don't think they were as quick as they looked today, not that much faster,” said Hamilton.

“I don't know what times they were doing, but there was obviously a big gap and traffic and strategy had a lot to do with that.”

He believed his decision to drive conservatively once he realised victory was out of reach had further inflated Ferrari's advantage.

“At the end, when I came out of my third pit stop I knew that I was 20 seconds already behind so there was no point in wrenching the neck out of the engine,” Lewis said.

Hamilton does not think McLaren has any cause for concern despite Ferrari interrupting its run of dominant performances.

"I don't think it is worrying," he said.

"I just think it shows they have made a good step forward and they obviously had a very good strategy which worked slightly better than ours today."

May legions of angels surround you daily.

Dear Ladies and Gents in Iraq and Afghanistan

I am going to take a certain amount of comfort in thinking that if you are reading this letter, then maybe you are in a place of relative peace and security.

My name is Margie and I live on the east coast of Canada and I am a mom and nanna. I am also just one of many many people around the world that worry and pray for you many times through the day. In fact some days it is so often I swear I can hear God say "Enough already. I heard you the first million times !" LOL

I know that you all have seen the protesters in the media but it seems the ones that get the most coverage are those that point fingers at you the troops. The ones that say you had a choice to say no and you could have refused to go to war. Please do not take their thoughts and words to heart for they do not know seem to understand how serious was your committment when you swore an oath. In fact some think that I am nuts when I tell them I am in awe of the courage each of you have shown to honour that second part of your oath where you vowed to obey the leader of your country.

There are far more protesters like myself and we do not miss an opportunity to lend our voice against these same leaders who have put you in this war. It is they who are wrong and not you the troops but it seems that we garner less media coverage.

I am in total awe of the bravery you show each day. I cannot even imagine what it is like to wake up and find oneself in the midst of such horror and violence. An enviroment where your very life and that of your comrades depends on being able to discern who is the enemy which has to be pretty tough when I see photos of kids no more than 10 or 12 holding guns; where the "norm" is kill or be killed. Indeed I pray for your physical protection but, more so I pray that your hearts and spirits can be protected when it is seared with the excruciating pain of seeing a brother in arms injured or killed. That your mind can be helped to deal with the nightmarish sites that you must witness day in and day out, especially when you have to deal with the death and maiming of the innocent citizens.

When the pain becomes too great, go deep within yourself to find that core part of your being where the love for your family, friends, and country still burns strongly; be assured that spot is still there but you have buried it for protection. Go there every chance that you can and warm yourself by that flame of love and allow your heart and spirit be washed and healed in this love and the love that God Himself sends.

I keep your family and friends in my prayers. That they too have angels to lift them up and comfort them while they await your safe return.

As always I pray that vast legions of angels are dispatched your way today and everyday. Be aware of them for they are there to protect you, and if you allow them, they will comfort you and use their wings absorb your pain and tears.

Lest We Forget

I do not know when exactly it happened but, Memeorial Day and Rememberance Day have become more focused on big business trying to sate it's insatiable greed as well as for many of us just another time off to party.

So, on this Memorial Day I offer my thanks to those who lost life, limb and spirit, courageously fighting for our freedoms and/or honouring the oath they swore when joining the military.

To those family and friends who lost people they loved, my heart felt prayers for your loss along with the hope that we may finally learn from our past mistakes; violence can never beget anything good.

Where "Taps" Originated

Here is something every Canadian and American should know. We in Canada and the USA have all heard the haunting song, "Taps". It's the song that gives us that lump in our throats and usually tears in our eyes.
But, do you know the story behind the song? If not, I think you will be interested to find out about its humble beginnings. Reportedly, it all began in 1862 during the Civil War, when Union Army Captain Robert Ellicombe was with his men near Harrison 's Landing in Virginia. The Confederate Army was on the other side of the narrow strip of land. During the night, Captain Ellicombe heard the moans of a soldier who lay severely wounded on the field. Not knowing if it was a Union or Confederate soldier, the Captain decided to risk his life and bring the stricken man back for medical attention. Crawling on his stomach through the gunfire,
the Captain reached the stricken soldier and began pulling him toward his encampment. When the Captain finally reached his own lines, he discovered it was actually a Confederate soldier, but the soldier was dead. The Captain lit a lantern and suddenly caught his breath and went numb with shock. In the dim light, he saw the face of the soldier. It was his own son. The boy had been studying music in the South when the war broke out. Without telling his father, the boy enlisted in the Confederate Army. The following morning, heartbroken, the father asked permission of his superiors to give his son a full military burial, despite his enemy status. His request was only partially granted.
The Captain had asked if he could have a group of Army band members play a funeral dirge for his son at the funeral. The request was turned down since the soldier was a Confederate. But, out of respect for the father, they did say they could give him only one musician. The Captain chose a bugler. He asked the bugler to play a series of musical notes he had found on a piece of paper in the pocket of the dead youth's uniform. This wish was granted. The haunting melody, we now know as "Taps" ... used at military funerals was born.
The words are :

Today we have with us Rafe Furst ,one of the founders of "Bad Beat On Cancer". I want to say that what he and Phil Gordon has started is quite admirable .

1. I think it's great that a tourney is run with proceeds going to cancer research .Seems everyone knows someone that has cancer...I myself just recently found out I have lung cancer . What gave the inspiration to start such a tourney ?

First of all, thank you for sharing that you have lung cancer, and best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Phil Gordon and I were raising money and awareness for the Cancer Research & Prevention Foundation during our year-long sports odyssey (Ultimate Sports Adventure) when we came up with the idea. It was at the 2003 WSOP, and we realized that everyone wants to help, they just need to be shown how and it needs to be painless for them. The concept of a pledge when you win is easier for people to warm up to than a guaranteed donation because when you win, you are happy to share the wealth, and when you lose you have no regrets about giving up some of your hard-earned bankroll.

2. What tournaments are part of "Bad Beat on Cancer" and where can folk find the games to play ?

Every tournament! BBOC was designed to be self-organizing and to appeal to everyone's philanthropic side. If you are playing in a tournament, whether it be with your buddies at home, online or in a casino, you should consider making a 1% pledge. We even institutionalized this concept via the Pledge for Life initiative, see the About section on the BBoC home page:

In terms of specific BBOC labeled events, Phil and I host a booth at the WSOP and people can pledge specifically for any events they are playing there. We give them a pledge pin, a buddy-bracelet, and list them on the website.

One of the players on Full Tilt Poker decided to run BBoC tourneys about once a month on the site where the entry fees are donated to CRPF, so that's another way you can support the cause.

3. If a person does not play there can they still donate ,and what if they want to pledge an amount other than 1%?

Mostly answered in #2 above, but in terms of other amounts, yes, we encourage people to pledge whatever they can. Phil and I are 2% Pledge for Lifers. Other folks, like Nolan Dalla, who aren't playing (he runs the WSOP media center) have donated specific dollar amounts. Phil Hellmuth gave $25K last year, unrelated to his normal 1% pledge of winnings. Fans of poker players have even done "fantasy team" pledges where they follow one or more players and root them on, matching a fraction of the player's winnings as a donation.

4. How do people know their money is going to a good cause?

100% of proceeds from BBOC goes to CRPF. There is no overhead taken out of BBOC, it's all done grass-roots style. CRPF itself is very well respected and gets exemplary marks from the various charity watchdogs. Here's one report:

5. Why is the Cancer Research & Prevention Foundation the beneficiary of Bad Beat?

Phil and I chose CRPF as our charity of choice for the USA tour based on a nationwide search we did. We like the low overhead rate (historically 15% - 18%) and we felt strongly about the universality of the cause and the CRPF mission. As you mentioned, there is hardly a person alive who isn't touched either personally or indirectly by cancer at some point. Ultimately it is the people who work there, including founder Bo Aldige and COO Jan Mahrer, who make us proud to be associated with CRPF. The Board has 25 members (almost as many as the Staff), and all of us donate our time and money. The transparency and dedication with which CRPF people work is something I wish all organizations had.

I am a cat lover. well a animal lover. But mainly cats. Since having my own place, i have had 3 cats. My first cat i had was 12yrs old when she died of heart problem,{we had her from when she was a kitten} and thought we would leave it a while before getting another one. So we left it about a year and decided to get an older cat. And that's when we got my favourite cat. His name was Eddie and he was nearly 2yrs old when we got him. He was big. And really just my cat. He would always sleep by my feet and if i was having a bad night{back sufferer} he would come down with me and sit on my lap, purring away keeping me company and his purring would sooth me a bit. When we moved to our current address, i didnt think he would not like it, as there is no garden, as its on the 2ND floor flat. But he was just fine and seemed to settle in really well. Then on the 19Th December 2005, i had a phone call from the local vets,{Eddie had been mircochipped} saying he had died from injuries. Eddie had been knocked over by a car. I was heart broken. My best pal had died. My husband saw how upset i was and went out with our daughter. I didnt think anything off it but when they got back home, my husband had a cardboard box with him. And yes, it was a kitten. So we named him Eddie Jr,{E.J for short}. And now i have to give him up as he has a skin cond, which means it will cost us a fortune just to see what is causing it. But he will be going to a foster home where they will find out what is wrong with him and treat him. Then he will be re homed. Eddie Jr does not like to go out, so every 2-3 days i have to clean and change his litter tray, which as a back sufferer, does not help. But the burning question is weather to get another cat or not? Selling a Poker Hand is like Selling a Car
There is a core skill that you need to master in order to do well at the poker table: the ability to sell. Figuring out the right amount to bet is one way to showcase this talent.

You see, being a great poker player is like being a successful car salesman.

When a salesman tries to sell you a Chevy, there are several tells he'll look for. This information helps him get maximum value for the sale. He’ll ask you what you do for a living, how much you make – things like that. The more information he gathers, the more likely he'll be able to sell you a car at the highest price.
So, you ask, what in the world does any of this have to do with poker?

Plenty.

In No Limit Hold'em, the amount you bet could be the difference between getting fully paid off for your strong hand or scaring away a potential “buyer”. It could mean the difference between a winning session and a losing session.

The key difference in poker, though, is that you only have one chance to get it right.

A car salesman can always lower his price if it looks like the sticker is too high, but a poker player doesn’t have that luxury. Therefore, it's even more important to do your market research and understand who the buyer is.
At the poker table, the clues you’re looking for are right in front of you.

You hold powerful cards, but how strong is your opponent's hand? The stronger you think it is, the more you should bet.
Does your opponent think you bluff a lot? If you were caught bluffing earlier, how much did you bet then? This is important because you may now want to bet the same amount with a strong hand.
How many chips does your opponent have? This is similar to the car salesman who asks his customer how much he makes. The fewer chips your opponent has, the more precious they are to him.
Selling your hand for maximum value is a skill that truly separates the great players from the wannabes. It takes true talent to figure out how much you can squeeze out of an opponent without scaring them off -- especially since you only have one chance to get it right.
I recently did a reality show where my job was to teach Rob, of “Survivor” fame, how to become a professional poker player. In one particular session, he took home a decent win of about $400, yet I still blasted him.

Rob could have won more from his opponents if he'd bet the right amount, but he just didn’t get it. His response was, "I won, didn't I?"
Yes, but he didn't win enough. If he had played his cards right, he would have won $1,000! The way I see it, Rob lost $600; when you’re a professional poker player, that's how you have to look at it.
You can teach anyone the right cards to play, the odds of this or that, and the power of position. However, the most important skill -- knowing the correct amount to bet -- is the most difficult to teach because it relies so heavily on your ability to sell.

Listen, there’s a big difference between a bet of $1,200 and one of $1,325. If you could have won $1,325, but instead only pocketed $1,200, you just lost $125 that an expert wouldn't have lost.

Like a good car salesman, study the customer and then close the deal.
